In the comic story , they are n’t your standard ' tattoos ' made of ink , but a gift presented to Arthur Curry as a means of marking him a hero , among the Old Gods of the ocean . Without memory of who he is , or where he comes from , it ’s a sign of Aquaman theman , wholly separated from his legacy . The tattoos follow Arthur from this issue forward , as a ocular reminder of the physical , spiritual , and excited journey he ’s direct before return to the life history he once survive ( a return only now being approach in the strip ) .
By comparability , the significance of Aquaman ’s tattooscan be deciphered mainly through their significance in actual world , Polynesian ethnical beliefs and custom .
