A Dog ’s Journey ( the sequel to the heartwarming filmA Dog ’s Purpose ) brings back Bailey the Dog ( voiced by Josh Gad ) and his “ male child ” Ethan ( played once again by Dennis Quaid fromA Dog ’s aim ) as Bailey find a new design … protecting Ethans granddaughter CJ .
For the sequel , two - time Emmy Award winning theater director Gail Mancuso makes her feature film debut . We got a chance to talk to her about how this film came to be , how do you prepare to direct blackguard for a picture show , and much more .
Screen Rant : Hi … no bounder here . I saw dogs in the other interview and I ’m not seeing one here … that ’s okay … .
Gail Mancuso : I had one in my lap earlier , but then he had to go out and salve himself .
Screen Rant : Ah … effective reason actually . Gail , after yr of television .. predominantly funniness television … this is your first feature . What lead you to make this at long last being your first feature film ?
Gail Mancuso : Yeah … it ’s interesting , I never would have think I would have done this form of movie as my first feature of speech . I think for sure it would be a clowning , but this come to me through Gavin Polone , who I ’ve work with through television , who is a producer on this movie as well as Holly Bario from Amblin and uh … they jazz that I have five dogs … (laughs )
Screen Rant : That ’s kind of the résumé …
Gail Mancuso : Yes … and I think it ’s really important that … in fact everyone that operate on this flick had a dog … or has had some kinship with a dog … that does n’t sound right-hand . But anyway we ’re gon na go with it because that ’s the comedy in me .
Screen Rant : ( Laughs )
Gail Mancuso : So I think it shows on the screen . I think if you have a go at it dog , I think it ’s really important because you ’re just work a little extra harder and you know their behavior and you wanna fascinate that in the movie .
Screen Rant : I can definitely see that . The dogs are so fondly shot , every fourth dimension another hot dog or puppy dead reckoning comes in you’re able to learn the whole interview go “ ok … alright . ”
Gail Mancuso : pup !
Screen Rant : So here ’s an interesting question , or what I reckon is an interesting question here ’s hoping , was there any moment during product that you considered doing perchance more verbatim references to the dogs in the first film and their owners . You know Bailey locomote through a lot of lives and there were a duet of lives before he run back to Ethan in A Dog ’s Purpose , did you ever thought about , “ Oh would n’t it be nerveless if we could touch base on an older owner from the previous film even if it ’s not from the book . ” Did you ever conceive doing that ?
Gail Mancuso : No , because even adapting this movie from the novel , you have to make it belittled because plainly the novel is foresighted and it ’s a slight morsel more elaborate . So we have , I think the film is an hour and forty five minutes to be able-bodied to order our tale economically . Our primary care was the CJ character and we did n’t want to ver too far off from that . So we stayed with her , and how the dog Bailey was help CJ through her life .
Screen Rant : Makes common sense .
Gail Mancuso : Yeah .
Screen Rant : How do you even get down to preparation to conduct this many pawl ?
Gail Mancuso : Well as luck would have it I had a bully dog flight simulator , Bonnie , so she preps the heel . I upchuck them . She would add picture of dogs to me , recount me what their temperament was and then I go dally with them and poppycock , but in terms of … uh .. you know we would go into the script and this is what kind of deception I would desire and then she would go , “ Ok that ’s good , but maybe we should do this . ” So it was a very very coordinated effort between me and her .
Screen Rant : Ok … I have a unearthly pitch for you .
Gail Mancuso : DO IT !
Screen harangue : In suit they do another movie .

Gail Mancuso : ( Laughs ) That ’s awing . I have it away it . That ’s so cunning .
Screen Rant : Bailey is now a fuzz .
Gail Mancuso : THAT ’S SO CUTE . I have sex it . That s awe-inspiring .
