Louisa May Alcott ’s novelLittle Womenwas an immediate winner when it was published in 1868 , and has since been adapted to film , goggle box , and theatre multiple time , each version with a unparalleled tinge .
Set in 1860s Massachusetts , Little Womencenters on the woman of the March family - Meg , Jo , Beth , and Amy - and their passageway from puerility to womanhood , while also touching on musical theme like house , love , heartbreak , and grammatical gender roles . Back in 2016 , Greta Gerwig was hired to rewrite the script for a fresh adaptation , andwas choose as directorin 2018 . The cast is full of familiar fount , and the first lot of photos gives us a look at them in character .

Vanity Fairshared the first photos from Gerwig ’s take onLittle Women , as well as some insight on the creative process for this raw adaptation . The newfangled March sisters are Emma Watson ( Meg ) , Saoirse Ronan ( Jo ) , Eliza Scanlen ( Beth ) , and Florence Pugh ( Amy ) , with Laura Dern as their mother , Marmee March , and Meryl Streep as their productive aunt March . Also part of the cast is Timothée Chalamet , who plays Theodore “ Laurie ” Laurence , the March ’s neighbour who quickly imprint a friendly relationship with Jo .
The look of Gerwig ’s version is very different from the last moving-picture show adaptation of the novel , directed by Gillian Armstrong in 1994 , star Winona Ryder , Susan Sarandon , and Christian Bale . Armstrong ’s coloration pallet was warmer , with a lot of browned and orange timbre , while Gerwig ’s color scheme leans more towards softer color . According toVanity Fair , Gerwig rely on painting from the era to take a dissimilar look to it .
Gerwig also partake that this film feel like an autobiography , excuse , “ When you live through a al-Qur’an , it almost becomes the landscape of your inner lifespan . It becomes part of you , in a unfathomed way . ” She also mouth about the relationship and dynamic between Jo and Laurie , saying , “ in some ways , they are each other ’s similitude , ” something we can see in one of the photos above , with Jo wearing items of article of clothing that are typically label “ for men . ”
Gerwig and caller are work a much mystifying feeling atLittle Womenthan the version we ’ve seen before , with a sound understanding of the function these characters had in that earned run average and how they mirror some societal issue that are still present to this day .
