You ’re forever gon na be link to Tolkien now , having bring him . I need to ask , drop dead properly back to the start , when did you first come across him . Was it the books ? Was it fancy the pic ?
It was the script . It was the Hobbit . On the bent of About A Boy , actually , the director of that , the Weitz comrade , gave me a copy of it to read . And I ’ve still get that copy , it ’s sat on my bookshelf .
I empathize that you teach to do illustrations like Tolkien in provision for the role .
Yeah .
Could you peach a short bit about that ?
It was just something whereby I was … we were shoot X - Men : Dark Phoenix in the build - up to this and I was on set there and I was apparently working on the playscript and some of the languages and all those other things . I did n’t know , to be honest with you , that Tolkien did his own illustrations and drew his own map and all these variety of things , so I found that out and I was like , " that ’s unbelievable " , and then I ’d go back
and look at them . And then , some of the war paint artists who do the Beast ’s makeup are fantastic painters and matter , so I would employ their outfit whilst I was on set and kind of recreated his watercolour .
Do you have a particular favourite one that you did ?
Yeah , I call up my favourite one I gave the Dome . He ’s got it as a wrap nowadays .
Wonderful . This is a guy cable who is lauded so much for what he compose as much as what was write about him . What did you expect at when researching this part . Did you read the stuff that he spell or did you look into his story or both ?
We did both . We conk out back and show his work alongside biographies and any other info I could witness about him . And that was interesting , it was like kind of being an unpaid sleuthhound in a way . where I was " fine , this lines up with this , and this is where maybe he produce the inspiration for that . " And , then , the script does that bright as well , I think , where it kind of shows the kinship and the moment in his life where perhaps these idea staunch from .
Dome told me that you guys , the older actors , and then the kid actors had affectedness tests …
Mannerism test .
You know , to try and act them out . I talked with some of the other guys earlier about all their unlike ones . I inquire if there ’s anything that you guys work out for Tolkien and his character ?
Harry and I were working on the way of life he walk , there was how he had held his pen , there are matter like that we spend sentence together working on . And then obviously the agency he spoke , the dialect and everything as well . So those were all kind of the primary focal point for us .
Changes to Tolkien ’s story are necessary , as it is whenever you adapt a narration based on real life . What would be the major change to you ?
I find like there ’s thing that we have n’t put in the movie that were interesting things , like Edith actually had another fiancee and they fit up with Tolkien - all three of them went for afternoon tea before they rekindled their love story and love . So there ’s niggling thing like that that were n’t in the movie . But overall I guess we ’ve cover most of the aspects of his life : his Mum instigate him with lyric and then losing her and that essence of becoming an orphan and then finding a place and the relationships and erotic love that inspire him .
The Tolkien estate of the realm has obviously said they ’re not necessitate in the moving picture and examine to distance themselves from it . I inquire how that feel to you as the star of the film ?
It ’s one of those things that … you know , first off I ’m a fan of his , so it was an honor to get to play him and I retrieve we did a really respectful version of his young life and what exhort him . We ’ve invited them to see the photographic film . His great - grandson was in the World War I scenes in the trenches and he ’s going to occur to the premiere . So hopefully when they see it , they wish it .
And just one warm question - what ’s your favorite Lord of the Rings ?
Two tower .
