THE BIG COUNTRY is a taradiddle I ’ve had in mind for old age . I grew up in a very tough little - townspeople environment in West Texas and wanted to publish about that world and those multitude . The theme of violence and the hurt it does , both at the personal horizontal surface and in community , is something I return to again and again . So , I took that theme , gave it a cowboy chapeau and a hit man and here we are .
THE BIG COUNTRY is a Western Noir story , a meditation on fury that has echoes of our current ethnic discussions around toxic masculinity . I ’ve taken noir image like crime , outsiders and lone wolf and simply dragged them into the blazing sun or else of rain - drenched back streets . The fedoras have been replace by Stetsons . But the soul of these characters , their complicated inner lives , is what keep it in the family of Thompson , Ellroy and the name that bulk large large over everything : Cormac McCarthy .

4 ) HE’LL HAVE TO GO by Jim Reeves- This haunting , over - produced style of country medicine has just enough of the David Lynch feeling to transform it into something chilling . Just the way of life I care it . And when Jimbo hits that low note – look out .
5 ) IT WASN’T GOD WHO MADE HONKY TONK ANGELS by Kitty Wells – I was raised by a rugged bunch of Texas women . They were fierce , hard - scrabble and not to be messed with . Just like Kitty . This song reminds me of them .
6 ) ( Pardon Me ) I’VE GOT SOMEONE TO KILL by Johnny Paycheck – If you ask an explanation as to why this is on the listing , you should not be reading “ The Big Country ” .

12 ) I’VE GOT A fresh HEARTACHE by Ray Price – If you ever see me in my gondola singing at the top of my lungs , it will be to Ray Price . His euphony played across the endless jukebox ’s of my puerility . This may be a staring song .
13 ) I’M A honkey TONK GIRL by Loretta Lynn – There is no country music without Loretta . The hair’s-breadth . The voice . The piercing lyrics . She sounds like every girlfriend I ever had in Texas .
14 ) LET ’S conceive ABOUT know by Bob Luman – In explaining everything that ’s gone awry in music and fine art , he fundamentally lays out everything I indite about . So , there ’s that .
15 ) WALKIN ’ AFTER MIDNIGHT by Patsy Cline – Um … this song is about creepers . draw your blinds down , Patsy ’s in the region .

It ’s a major fundamental theme in the book . This strain is sad in many intended ( and unintended ways ) . It take on constantly in the background of my childhood .
18 ) HONKY TONK HEROES by Waylon Jennings – So , I ’ve doubled down on that idea . “ lovable failure , no account alky and honky tonk heroes like me . ” I ’m lucky I got out alive .
19 ) I’M LOOKING FOR BLUE eye by Jessi Colter – Another song my crime syndicate get laid to spill the beans after getting plowed . near times . ( Not really . )
20 ) TIME OF THE PREACHER by Willie Nelson – No other artist casts a foresighted tincture over my Texas year than Willie . I imagine a lot of people could say that . I can barely listen to this song without getting gag up . I heard it riding next to my Fatherhood in his truck , in my living room , tedious dance with a cousin-german on my nan ’s screened in back porch .
21 ) eject ME by Ray Price – my grannie Chloetielde ’s favorite song . We called her “ The Dirt Dauber ” ( as in the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant ) because she had a mighty sting . She is a serious breathing in for the women in “ The Big Country ” .
22 ) BLUE YODEL ( T for Texas ) by Jimmie Rodgers – every somebody I make love growing up could peach this song . Which is weird if you listen to the lyrics . And here ’s that scary yodeling again . Plus , there ’s execution involved . So , pretty much a unadulterated Texas birdcall .
23 ) MILES AND MILES OF TEXAS by Asleep At The Wheel – daily racialism , stereotypical fantasy point of view of Texas and a happy rhythm . Everybody ate this up without a 2d idea . Except me . This marked me as a crazy , so I retreated into comic books . They were more material than what you hear in this birdcall .
24 ) WRECK ON THE HIGHWAY by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a song about a whisky and blood - soaked car stroke . Now , this is what I call medicine !
25 ) FAMILY custom by Hank Williams Jr. – So much of “ The Big Country ” is about family and the devastating issue it can have on our lives . The “ sins of the Father of the Church ” as it were . Seems fitting to close with a nod in that focusing .
