Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

R2 - D2finally gets a sequel trilogy character card asStar Wars : The cost increase of Skywalkerreleases a new mickle of artwork . First introduced in the originalStar Warsin 1977 along with his constant companion C-3P0 , the feisty astromech droid affectionately have it off as Artoo cursorily became a buff darling for his plucky courageousness in help Luke Skywalker and company take down the Galactic Empire ’s ultimate superweapon theDeath Star .

After his key role in the first flick ’s climactic battle , which left him badly damaged but still alive , Artoo went on to be a sub again in the sequelsThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi . Not quick to leave the plucky droid behind , George Lucasbrought Artoo and C-3P0 back for his prequel trilogy , and again the dome - headed little robot found himself in the middle of the action , this clock time run around rocket thrusters that allowed him to vaporize . Despite his central function in the previous sixStar Warsfilms however , Artoo has found himself conspicuously relegated to the background in the new subsequence trilogy , while novel droidBB-8has taken on the role of adorable non - human mascot . But the originalStar Warsdroid team of Artoo and Threepio may be back in the foreground in the approaching trilogy - cappingRise of Skywalker , at least move by other trailers , which among other things tease a potentially tragic conclusion forThreepio .

In a further indication that Artoo will   actually have something to do inRise of Skywalker , the droid has finally gotten his own sequel trilogy character bill sticker . A whole novel batch of post-horse has indeed just been released by Lucasfilm onward of the movie ’s reaching , featuring 12 of the movie ’s main characters . See the notice in the space below :

The dash of the poster patently is a throwback to the oldStar Warstrading card fans collected back in the late ' 70s and early ' 80s when Lucas ' picture show first burst on the scene and took over pop culture . The posters are also seemingly designed specifically to understate spoilers , as they all feature the character isolated against   starry screen background with nothing from the actual scenes in the movie to potentially give away mystery ( though it ’s possible that the most eagle - eyed fans may still find soupcon in the usable image ) .

The only real obvious hint give by the new passel of posters is in fact the comportment of R2 - D2 , whose absence seizure from the late trilogy has been a generator of frustration for many fans . Now however , it seemsStar war : The Rise of Skywalkeris quick to bring affair full circle by allow Artoo and Threepio take on a central role in the account as they did all those years ago when fans first fall in passion withStar Warsand its endlessly squabble droid duo . Perhaps the movie will even please fan theorists by employingan other R2 - D2 twistdreamed up but at last abandoned by Lucas .
