As intemperately as it may be to believe , we ’re now almost only half a class aside from the dismissal of the final mainStar Warsfilm . The bet are high forStar Wars : Episode IX : The boost of Skywalker- in terms of the story it tells , the resolution it provides , the financial success it provides Disney and Lucasfilm with , and so very much more . The plastic film will most likely be the last sentence we see the original trilogy fictional character , including Leia Organa , Luke Skywalker , and Lando Calrissian . It also may be the last time we see characters like Rey , Finn , and Kylo Ren , too - though that one is emphatically less sure .

All the same , no matter of the ending that the celluloid provides these characters , there are certain thing that the movie definitely needs to allow , in terms of answers to ongoing questions , narrative growth for characters urgently in need of growth and progress , and a want of unnecessary dramatic play and clunky storytelling . Expectations may be high for whatStar Wars : Episode IXdelivers , come December , and frankly , the tilt of thing we want to see and do n’t want to see could plausibly be verging on endless . But for now , we ’ve trim the listing down to a top five thing we hope to see , and a top five thing we definitely do n’t . Here they are .

Hope: A more unified Resistance

InEpisode VII : The Force Awakens , the good guys were presented as a truly coordinated front , with an impressively large , secure Resistance military force on their side . But by the end ofEpisode VIII : The Last Jedi , the Resistance appeared to be almost on its last leg , due to multiple mass casualties that guide position during the film ’s action - tamp down battles . Leia ascertain an uneasy Rey that they have everything they need right on there on the Millennium Falcon to be capable to start again .

But willEpisode IX : The ascension of Skywalkermake estimable on that hope ? We can only desire so , especially enter the limited amount of Leia footage JJ Abrams and company would have had access to . But perhaps an unintended benefit of the footage they did have access to is that the Resistance would have appeared strong , and larger , at almost any power point during the anterior two films . Hopefully , the Resistance is as strong as it deserves to be .

Don’t: More grandstanding from Poe

The Last Jedimay be one of the most controversialStar Warsfilms to date , but one of the freehanded mistake the extremely talk over cinema made was in its characterization of Oscar Isaac ’s Poe Dameron . While Poe was scantily a character inThe Force Awakens , more of a base - in for a heroic fibre than an actual Heron , The Last Jedideveloped him into a much fuller one - and a genuinely arrogant , unappealing one at that .

DuringThe Last Jedi , Poe give away himself to be a selfish , misogynistic , king - thirsty hot shot who only cares about his own ego and his pauperization to be in control at all times . If he ’s going to get along with the balance of the Resistance , and contribute meaningfully to succeeding adventures rather than block them , he ’s get going to need to eat on some serious low Proto-Indo European and learn to be a team instrumentalist - and tight .

Hope: A fitting sendoff for original trilogy heroes

The sequel trilogy has already forced us to say goodbye to two of our three legendary original trilogy champion . Han Solo was savagely off inThe Force Awakensin a tragic standoff with his own confused son , Ben . Luke Skywalker heroically sacrificed himself for the future of the Resistance by becoming one with the Force at the end ofThe Last Jedi . There is , of course of instruction , the hazard for at least Luke to regress in a meaningful style inThe boost of Skywalker , should he appear as a Force Ghost . The enjoyment of a voiceover from Luke in the first teaser trailer certainly suggests as much .

ButThe Rise of Skywalkerwill be the concluding prison term we see two other darling heroes - General Leia Organa , and Lando Calrissian . The moving picture needs to provide these two , and Luke by extension , with truly satisfying , emotionally fulfil end - not only for tale reasons , but for the rooter , too . IfThe Last Jediwas controversial , the notion thatThe Rise of Skywalkercould fail these character in any way would surely lead to ever more disagreements .

Don’t: More JJ Abrams mystery boxes

JJ Abrams has done a lot of good for theStar Warsfranchise already . He ’s responsible , in magnanimous part , for bringing the saga back in such a successful mode , even if some fan finger hisThe Force Awakensrelied too hard on nostalgia and parallel with the original trilogy . But Abrams is also know for a peculiarly maddening storytelling machine : the use of what he himself refers to as mystery box seat - mysteries that help as nothing but points of distraction and informant of obsession for viewers everywhere .

The Force Awakensset up plenty of them : Who were Rey ’s parents ? What are the Knights of Ren ? Who is Supreme Leader Snoke ? What happened between Han and Leia ? What the heck are Rathtars and Kanjiklub and why are we wasting so much time on them ? These mysteries were all but wholly superfluous and unnecessary , andThe cost increase of Skywalkerhas far too much to accomplish without being weighted down by these distraction .

Hope: More badass female heroes - and villains

The continuation triloguy has dependably provided viewer and fan the world over with plenty of exciting female eccentric worth root for and look up to . While the original trilogy had Leia Organa and Mon Mothma , and the prequel trilogy had Padme Amidala , the sequel trilogy has fully devoted itself to creating and promoting strong , potent female characters of all walks of life : Rey , Rose Tico , Maz Kanata , Captain Phasma , Amilyn Holdo , Kaydel Ko Connix , and , of class , General Leia Organa herself .

The cast ofThe Rise of Skywalkeralready includes some potentially exciting new female characters , too : Naomi Ackie ’s Jannah , and Keri Russell ’s deep new gain . We do n’t know much about these reference , other than the fact that we ’re thrilled to see what they make for to the serial publication . Whether they ’re heroes or scoundrel , we certainly trust thatThe Rise of Skywalkerwill proceed the trilogy ’s trend of promoting distaff strength in all its configuration .

Don’t: Too much complicated First Order politics

Something thatStar Warshas always struggle with - and is good off avoiding in all - is the knitty game details of government , whether governmental or within an organization of king . The prequel trilogy was all bogged down by the Senate storyline , and even the original trilogy lag somewhat when picture the working of the Empire from the interior of meetings with Darth Vader and his squad .

Hopefully , The Rise of Skywalkerlearns from the mistakes of what come before it . It would be smartest to avert cut into too profoundly into the workings of the First Order in the absence seizure of the hefty presence of Supreme Leader Snoke . Even more important , the film should avoid trust too hard on the one note villainous General Hux . The case add absolutely nothing to the story . Inflating his role in any way would be a serious mistake .

Hope: A redeemed Ben Solo

The subsequence trilogy has introduced many instantly iconic characters into the overarchingStar Warssaga , include Daisy Ridley ’s Rey and John Boyega ’s Finn . But very few characters are as enigmatic , as riveting , and as truly compelling and brilliantly acted in all ofStar Warsas Adam Driver ’s Kylo Ren , antecedently known as Ben Solo .

Kylo Ren has been a character fix by conflict and privileged turmoil from the very commencement of the motion picture series , so it only makes sense forThe Rise of Skywalkerto resolve this worked up fight in a meaningful style . Hopefully , this resolution will fall in the manakin of Kylo accepting the light that has always been inside of him , integrating both light and dark and becoming Ben Solo once again .

Don’t: A Palpatine red herring

Arguably the most shocking and most speak about import from the entireThe ascending of Skywalkertrailer is the one moment that did n’t even occur on screen door . The   brief teaser trailer was crest with the forbidding laughter of none other than Ian McDiarmid ’s Emperor Palpatine , and the instrument panel forThe Rise of Skywalkerwas end with an appearance from Ian McDiarmid himself . meditation has been rampant as to how on earth Palpatine will be incorporated into the overall story ofEpisode IX .

It would , therefore , be a total dashing hopes and a thriftlessness of devotee energy ifThe Rise of Skywalkerreveals the entire Palpatine involvement to be inconsequent - or yet another one of JJ Abrams ’s beloved mystery box . It ’s impossible at this spot to know just how much the Emperor will be used in the film . Hopefully , it will be in a more meaningful way than the trailer teased .

Hope: Balance in the Force

The divination of the take One in the prequel trilogy contained a crucial reveal of what a potential Chosen One would do : bring some much - needed balance to the Force . When Anakin Skywalker settle , Obi - Wan Kenobi even tells him , " You were the take One .   You were supposed to put down the Sith , not link up them . You were theorise to convey equipoise to the Force ,   not leave it in darkness . " While Anakin may not have been the prefer One as prophecied , the potency for a Chosen One still exist - and it may even be more than one individual , at that .

The Rise of Skywalkerhas the voltage of wreak the Skywalker Saga full circle , by bringing balance to the Force through the mutual leadership and efforts of Rey and one of the last remaining Skywalkers , Kylo Ren . The two have been shown to be some of the strongest Force wielders the galaxy has ever seen . If anyone could bring balance wheel to the Force , it would unquestionably be them .

Don’t: Rey’s parentage reveal undone

The discussion about who Rey ’s parents could possibly be is one that has engage on for far too long - even antedate the release ofThe Force Awakens . Poor Daisy Ridley has been badger for years now about the nature of Rey ’s origins , and JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson have fielded their fair share of question , too . myriad possibility have been postulated - Rey Skywalker , Rey Kenobi , Rey Palpatine , and many , many more . But asThe Last Jedirevealed , Rey is a nobody , descended from cypher .

And that ’s on the dot how it should be . To haveThe Rise of Skywalkerundo this Revelation of Saint John the Divine would totally cheapen the value of Rey ’s existence as a new kind of hero sandwich in theStar Warsuniverse . The Force is n’t only given to those who wield the epithet of the powerful families we already know . Rey ’s identity as born from nothing , only to be intend for immensity , is a much more powerful message . It would be a real shame to ruin that .
