Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
Mark Hamill shares details of hisStar Wars : The Force Awakenspitch that would ’ve gift Luke a very different arc in the film . head by J.J. Abrams , the 2015 movie kicked off the subsequence trilogy that continued in 2017’sStar Wars : The Last Jediby Rian Johnson . It introduced a new genesis of heroes and scoundrel inhabiting the dear lore like Rey ( Daisy Ridley ) , Finn ( John Boyega ) , Poe ( Oscar Isaac ) and Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver ) . It also bought back legacy characters led by Luke , Leia ( Carrie Fisher ) and Han Solo ( Harrison Ford ) . But while the latter two played a important part in the story , the Jedi Master did n’t come on CRT screen until the very last moment of the moving picture .
This patently spawn a luck of doubtfulness that paved the means forThe Last Jedi . After Rey found an set-apart Luke in a ego - bring down exile , Episode 8devoted a chunk of its prison term in Ahch - To , where fans learnedhow much the darling Jedi Master changedsince they last saw him inReturn of the Jedi . But if Hamill had his means , this would n’t be how he would ’ve want his character ’s arc to pan out out as he reveals hisThe Force Awakenspitch that would ’ve set up Luke in a very unlike path .
connect : Star Wars ameliorate The Force Awakens ' speculative " Alderaan " Moment
sit down down withTHRfor Awards Chatter podcast , the veteran histrion got candid about his thoughts on what ’s gone down in theStar Warsmain saga , and how his preferredThe Force Awakensnarrative would ’ve fixed its biggest missed opportunity . accord to Hamill , he would ’ve wanted Luke to get in on the midst of thing , allowing fans to see him , Leia and Han reunify on the big screen before everyone ’s preferred galactic smuggler was killed by his own boy .
" Everyone utter about the daze of realize that , on Force Awakens , I do n’t come in until the last Sir Frederick Handley Page , a bigger shock to me was them killing Han Solo before Luke could ever see his undecomposed friend again . I intend , it might be egotistically motivated , but I said , ' Holy cow , that ’s a real missed chance . ' Even having the three of us together , even briefly . I pitched Abrams on the idea of , ' you could still have me come in at the very ending , but how about this . How about Leia ’s trying to contact me telepathically , she gets disappointed because there ’s no answers , so she rushes to the Modern Death Star .
" And she almost gets there but she gets barricade by two Stormtroopers and , just before she ’s nobble , one Stormtrooper change by reversal to the other one , blows him aside , pulls off his helmet and says " Hi , te , I ’m here to rescue you . " ' I say , ' It ’ll blow the ceiling off the joint , I ’m still in it at the very end . ' "
Hamill continued to explain how this would ’ve added emotional free weight on how Han was ruthlessly bump off by Kylo Ren withthe Skywalker twins personally witness his deathinstead of Rey and Finn . Chewbacca was also there , and he had a primal response to seeing his best buddy pour down , but the moment would ’ve had a stronger wallop if Luke and Leia were also there .
" I think it ’s more good to have citizenry that really have a history with Han Solo witness his death and be ineffectual to stop it . His wife , the female parent of his tiddler , his best friend , instead of two characters that have known him , what , 20 minutes ? But they get the keys to the land , and they ’re the deciders , so you just have to survive with it . "
The slant has a callback toA New Hopewhen Luke and Han saved an imprisoned Leia , kicking off their adventures together . And even ifThe Force Awakenspushed through with the death of Han , Hamill ’s lurch would ’ve spun a importantly differentEpisode 8- one where Luke ’s already part of the main narrative instead of waiting for the final section of the film to join the competitiveness against the First Order .
Regardless of what one feels aboutStar state of war : The Force AwakensandThe Last Jedi , Hamill ’s right - not seeing Luke , Leia and Han together for one concluding time in the sequel trilogy is Lucasfilm ’s large missed opportunity . And for a franchise that banks heavily on nostalgia , it ’s difficult to think that they did n’t prioritize this specific moment . This way , rooter would ’ve had a right opportunity to say goodbye to these legacy character and move frontward with the new heroes of the enfranchisement .
