Stephen Kinghas earned his Master of Horror title for respectable reason : the author is quite skilled at turning the unremarkable humdrum of life into a live on incubus . He can render his reader afraid of everything from icebox to cesspool to even qat , spawn a lifetime of irrational veneration in a few chapter ( or , in many cases , C of pages ) .

King has scared many a Constant Reader out of their pants , yet his beasties , ghoulies , and villain occasionally just miss the Saint Mark . Whether they ’re too unrealistic or silly to be scarey or just do n’t act in the story he ’s set them in , some of King ’s monsters seem to lack the heebie - jeebie ingredient .

Charlie Decker

The protagonist in 1977’sRage , which was primitively titledGetting It On , is a monster for a number of ground , but mostly because he ’s a schooling gunslinger who does n’t care about human living and takes out his instructor before hold his schoolroom hostage . King has taken this novel off the shelf since it ’s been used to inspire multiple school shootings .

Even if the book were n’t cited as the aspiration for school violence , Decker is pretty terrible , not even understand his own motive and sound like an incel phantasy . King has since used the cut-rate sale of his essay " triggerman , " which excuse his decision , to benefit the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence .

The Buick 8

Anything can be terrify in a King oeuvre , and many of his car , from Christine to the post wagon on the Mile 81 rest area , are prime examples . The Buick 8 from the 2002 bookFrom a Buick 8was not . It ca n’t keep its own monster position clean enough to be one .

Is it an inter - dimensional hepatic portal vein ? Does it conserve the balance between multiple world ? Does it lure people to their doom ? We do n’t experience . Nothing is for sure , salvage for the uncanny serial Orcinus orca trophies the Buick has pull in over the years . In the end , save for a cracked windshield , the beast stands as police enforcement still does n’t know what to do with the thing .

Reverend Lester Lowe

Who picks flowers at a burial site and becomes a wolfman ? Reverend Lester Lowe , that ’s who!Cycle of the Werewolfis a fun book that , unlike most of King ’s works , can be read in a undivided sitting , but it does n’t give us a nifty monster . There ’s no backstory to the werewolf , likely because the book was too short for one , and while many of King ’s " no rime or reason " horrors put to work well due to their chaos , a pastor does not .

We need more from Lowe for him to be a substantial King monster , and Lowe himself should have more complicated feeling about his dual life . The pacing of the book around the moon ’s cycles and the protagonist , who uses a wheelchair , are rattling . But establish that King ’s only worked with werewolf twice , and that this representative was the only time the savage was the main resister , it ’s a letdown .

The Sleepwalkers

Stephen Kingis proof that you have to make a lot of mistakes on the path to success , as several of his turkey project have revealed . 1992’sSleepwalkersis campy and gross on a stratum that does n’t work out with its assumption . The 2nd half of the film does n’t complete the horror apparatus the first part established , but the lusus naturae are a terrible female parent - and - son duo whose obsession with Virgo and each other ruin the supernatural creatures they should be .

There are so many problems with these shapeshifters . Their weakness ? Cats . They can be unseeable , but they do n’t use that powerfulness to protect themselves so as to really enfeeble anyone ’s vitality because then there would be no picture show , as there should n’t have been in the first spot .

The Killer Kite

It would be a Lovecraftian monster if it had a good name , something to do , and essentially anything other than a passing cite in a novelette . We all need Stephen King to frighten away us with our puerility toys , appliances , and even our sink drains , but a Killer Kite witness in passing duringThe Mistis just stupid .

There ’s a reason why it was n’t included in theadaptationsofThe Mist , and that ’s because nobody is frightened of a green killer kite merely described as a " nightmarish , half - seen inhabit kite . " Even if it has tentacle or teeth , it at least needs a new name .

The Sun Dog

Stephen King’sFour Past Midnightis a delightful collecting of novellas . It rightfully gain the Bram Stoker Award in 1990 for Best Collection and became the source material for some of King ’s so - so moving picture , includingThe Langoliers . But the novellaThe Sun Dog , however playfulness it was in terms of the return key to Castle Rock and the exploration of a supernatural objective , just did n’t deliver the terrific monster it needed .

The novella is built around the tension of the threat of the beast , which function quite well until we agnise we ’re never conk out to meet the dog in the photos . Pop Merrill and an explode camera prove to be more formidable than a monster that never even manifests . The book still ends with the scourge of the Lord’s Day dog and not with its appearance .

The Plant

Back in 2000 , Stephen King expel a sequent novel release via six installments know asThe Plant Book One : Zenith Rising . The tale just began to rise in tension when he abandoned the project , leaving Constant Readers to inquire just what was so bad about this plant .

Is the plant the primary villain in the narration , or is it the author who has been revealed to the police ? We may never know , and it was probably a mistake of King ’s to publish his old Christmas cards as a chapbook that he had n’t already finished in the first piazza . Even writers who dabble in fanfiction jazz the ira of readers who require a resolution to a fib started a decade ago .

Mr. Gray

Dreamcatcher , issue in 2001 after King was recover from a terrible accident , is another body of work that the generator cite as one of his bad . Under the influence of pain practice of medicine while write it , King said he does n’t even care the book of account . While it has so many cracking King base , from its Derry , Maine vibes to the quartet of protagonist taking on a behemoth together to the inclusion body of Duddits as the hero sandwich , it ultimately is a blistering muckle .

Mr. Gray and the alien spores are n’t even shuddery . This time around , the monsters hail off as goofy , which is even worse when you think that King almost named the bookCancerinstead .

Tommyknocker Gas

Stephen King admits that 1987’sThe Tommyknockersis one of his worst books , even if it ’s still fun to learn . The antagonist in the Word begins as a mortal gasolene that inhabits the people of Haven , do them to become destructive mastermind who create cool thing but take each other out . It ’s like Iron Man meetsTexas Chainsaw Massacre .

Even though there are parallels in the story to King ’s substance abuse and some horror and sci - fi goodness , there ’s also so much nonsense that it ’s just not something that terrifies us like his better works are know to do .

All The Machines Of The World

1986’sMaximum Overdrivemay have the best soundtrack of any film , but it ’s one of King ’s worst whole works . generate every piece of machinery in the public a homicidal gismo overnight sounds incredible in theory , but it just was n’t executed well . Sentient machinery is already far - fetched , but the cheesy film ’s pestiferous character really condemn the moving-picture show . It did n’t exercise when M. Night Shyamalan did it with plant years after , either .

Just picturing that waitress ( or Tupper babe , as King might say ) pipe up , " We made you ! " is cringey . This is one that would probably be much good if it were remade today , peculiarly considering how many humankind rely on machines as part of their own bodies .
