When Disney first acquired Lucasfilm and annunciate that they would be making aStar Warssequel trilogy to stay the saga beyondReturn of the Jedi , rooter were in the main emotional to see Harrison Ford as Han Solo , Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia , and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker on the big screen again . Butthe sequels have acquaint us to a bunch of new characters , too . In fact , the story has become increasingly focussed on them and their journeys . There are some great novel characters and some weak ones .

Worst: Supreme Leader Snoke

Andy Serkis ’ apparent motion - capture character Supreme Leader Snoke started off pretty well . During his brief appearances inThe Force Awakens , he was mysterious and intriguing . Was he really as marvellous in real life sentence as he was in the holograph ? How did he get inside Kylo Ren ’s head ? However , what we discovered when his character was expandedinThe Last Jediwas that he was nothing more than a pale imitation of Emperor Palpatine who was nowhere near as   herculean as he promised to be . He waspretty easily down – more easily killed than his sentry duty , even . So , that was reasonably disappointing .

Best: Poe Dameron

As both a superstar pilot and a wizardly rogue , Poe Dameron islike Luke Skywalker and Han Solo roll into one . He ’ll stop at nothing to bring down the tyrannical political power that ’s taking over the world , like Luke , buthe’ll also interview self-confidence and keep abreast his own rule script , like Han . He has Luke ’s pleasantness , but also Han ’s rebelliousness . The conflict between Luke and Hanexists entirely within Poe ’s character , and he ’s just one guy . The continuously likable Oscar Isaac is gross for the part , playing Poe as basically the nicest , coolest guy wire ever . Everyone would want to be Poe Dameron ’s friend .

Worst: Maz Kanata

Lupita Nyong’o is a terrific doer – one of the finest actors work today , in fact – but she ’s been wasted in theStar Warssequel trilogy on a Yoda blood - off whose sole aim was to spout a gang of expounding to get Rey from point A to point B. And it was made even bad inThe Last Jediwhen she was crammed into an early scene , just to make indisputable she made a contractually obligated show in the film . Shestarted off as a dissatisfactory characterand then she was shoehorn into the next one , making matters even direr . It ’s looking like she ’ll be shoehorned intoThe Rise of Skywalker , too .

Best: Rose Tico

BecauseStar Warsfans find peril by a woman of colour in a significant role in the story , or some other equally asinine understanding , Kelly Marie Tran front ruthless backlash on societal mediaafter the release ofThe Last Jedi . Her characterRose Tico is strong , safe - hearted , and loveable – and she ’s make full with the wisdom that can convey us together : “ That ’s how we ’re gon na pull ahead . Not fighting what we hate ; economize what we screw . ”

Rose will be back inThe Rise of Skywalker , since Finn managed to convalesce her unconscious body and get her onto the Millennium Falcon at the final stage ofThe Last Jedi , and hopefully   the sexist and racist round   can finally learn to accept her as   Tran stands defiantly in the face of their hate speech . It ’s long delinquent .

Worst: General Hux

Domhnall Gleeson is a brilliant actor who has gift fantastic performances in recent movies likeEx Machinaandmother ! , as well as an episode ofBlack Mirror . But hisStar Warscharacter General Hux is so serious all the time . He ’s just no fun . Also , General Hux was one side ofthe terrible Abbott and Costello routineinvolving Poe Dameron in the opening scene ofThe Last Jedi . He was , of course , the straight man , because he takes everything so in earnest . The gag belonged in aRobot Chickenepisode , not an actualStar Warsmovie – and sure as shooting not in the opening panorama .

Best: Captain Phasma

Rian Johnson may have given Captain Phasmaa lame and unceremonial death sceneinThe Last Jedi , withthat corny “ chrome - dome ” joke , but she was a fascinating character up to that period . It was barely surprising , since Gwendoline Christie hadalready played a badass warrior in one nerdy franchise . There was very small doubtfulness that she could do it again . We could n’t see Christie ’s font under the shiny helmet , so all she had to convey the character was her organic structure language , hand gestures , and line delivery – and she still nailed it . It ’s no wonder that Captain Phasma wasThe Force Awakens ’ best - selling action figure .

Worst: Vice Admiral Holdo

Laura Dern gave a corking performance , as she always does , in the part of Vice Admiral Holdo inThe Last Jedi . Plus , Holdo was involved in the awesome sequence where she guns the Resistance ’s ship into light - speed anduses it to cover through the First Order ’s fleet . However , that ’s all she has go for her . Aside from that cool shot , she was qualify as a generic federal agency figure to advance Poe Dameron ’s development by having him Johnny against her rules of order . The function could ’ve been filled by anyone with a high membership in the Resistance than Poe – she did n’t really have an identity of her own .

Best: Kylo Ren

Usually , Star Warsvillains are rigidly malevolent . They ’re set in their ways on the Dark Side of the Force and they ’ll stop at nothing to overtop the galaxy . OnlyDarth Vader has discover redemption , and even then , it was right at the end . He was a wholly bad beau throughout the entire original trilogy before see the misplay in his ways .

But Kylo Ren is oppugn his own actions on the job . The brilliantAdam Driver has brought some real nuanceto the role of Kylo Ren – the variety of nuance that is seldom figure in theStar Warssaga .

Worst: DJ

Benicio del Toro ’s deep role inThe Last Jedishowed some hope in the calendar month lead up to the photographic film ’s liberation . Rian Johnson declare that the part was forebode “ DJ ” in the handwriting and on the call sheets for the sake of ease , buthe does n’t actually have a name . fan were intrigued and emotional . But then his character turned out to not be so interesting . He ’s a hacker whose allegiances transfer at the drop of a dime , and he came and go away without making much of an impact . He’snot slated to return inThe ascent of Skywalker , so he ’ll probably just be forgotten constantly .

Best: Rey

While the titleThe lift of Skywalkerdoesn’t necessarily think that Rey is a Skywalker , she is undeniably a significant part of theStar Warsmythology . We ’ll project out exactly how significant when the newfangled pic is let go of and all becomes clear , but for now , we do eff that she ’s easy the best fibre in the new movies . She ’s the characterwhose journeying we ’ve been follow the most closely , and while we do n’t get laid the specific of her backstory , we fuck that she does have a tragical yesteryear and she ’s amassed a ton of specialty to move on from that and become a hoagie .
