admonition : SPOILERS forEvent Leviathan # 5

The DC Universe is finally getting its own adaptation of Marvel ’s malicious mutant Magneto . Since departing Marvel , Brian Michael Bendis has been make his mark across the entire DC Universe . He ’s about toreveal Superman ’s secret identityto the   entire world , and most recently make   a malevolent villain inEvent Leviathan . Now , afterfinally confirming Leviathan ’s individuality , Bendis has divulge he has grand and sinister plan for the mysterious mastermind . The form of plans that could turn DC ’s latest supervillain into their very own " Magneto , " one of the most complex and   appealing comic book villains of all time .

Even before Bendis ' event , Leviathan had been a villainous administration loiter around the DC Universe for years . The organization was a major player in Grant Morrison ’s epicBatman : Incorporatedseries and , as terrorist establishment go , Leviathan was as big and malefic as they get . But   since jumping to the DC ship , Brian Michael Bendis has   reshaped   the establishment to his own goal . And he ’s only getting started .

Invincible comic

The head of Leviathan was recentlyrevealed to be Mark Shaw the Manhunter , a chemical group with somewhat indecipherable , retconned , and neutered blood . While named for the android soldier   exiled by the Green Lantern Corps – and the similarities are there for readers to see – the motivation of Shaw ’s master plan are his own . And it ’s the effectualness of that destination , and the devotion he show   that make Mark Shaw a very serious Isle of Man to the DC Universe . In a unexampled interview withCBR ,   Bendis explicate how he envision Mark Shaw and Leviathan   as DC ’s version of the warlike Marvel leader :

It ’s much more superimposed and about the authorities and people [ being ] sick of the fashion the world work ; you make out what Mark is sell . I wrote this down , and hoi polloi know my doctrine about this , that Magneto is plausibly the right baddie , because you may have a conversation with Magneto … and he ’s not incorrect . What he ’s say is very arguable , but what he does is wildly incorrect – historically , I ’m not talking comedian in the past brace age . So with that in mind , Mark ’s argument , other than his actions , is part of what we require to have playfulness with here .

Magneto is   undeniably one of the most   " layered " villain in comic book history . A fictional character with a ample and storied account that , as Bendis indicate out , grants him a dangerous power to garner sympathy and understanding . And that ’s one of the most authentic weapons at Magneto ’s administration .

The   similarity between Leviathan and Magneto   have nothing to do with wielding metal ,   but everything to do with motivation . Magneto ’s plan and schemes are almost always violent and nothing light of terrorism , but his position on mutant equality in the ten - Men universe is n’t ' wrong . ' Mutants have face unremitting persecution in Marvel ’s existence , adding some much - needed context to his ultimately uttermost worldviews . According to Bendis , Shaw is go to have a similarly sympathetic argument . It also   seems Leviathan ’s story will be inform by the current political climate , and his reflection of the public opinion that " the way the world run " needs to be change .

Magneto can manipulate one of the most abundant resource on the entire planet , but prison term and time again he ’s shown his ability to separate team , power , and entire politics with nothing more than his words . His judgement on the way normal humans treat mutants are utterly fascinating … if you blank out his willingness to completely eradicate the human race . But for those mutants who ’ve spent their integral lives being persecuted by that same human race , Magneto ’s word of honor can be implausibly inviting .

He might not bethe   MOST dangerous mutantin the Marvel Universe , but he ’s bring in the world to the brink of destruction legion times . By the same souvenir , Mark Shaw certainly is n’t the most powerful metahuman in the DC roll . But flop now , he ’s the most dangerous . A humanity whose destination is n’t to destroy Superman but to give him a domain worthy of protect . That might fathom appealing at first , but as Leviathan is motor to moreextremelengths in the come calendar month , there are bound to be a few casualty and victims . Hopefully Superman and the Justice League can stop himquicker than their ten - Men vis-a-vis .
