Though it ’s remembered as adistinctly American folly , The Vietnam Warwas an outside affair that damaged the collective psyche of a generation of young mass across many different countries that line up themselves entangled in that conflict . Australia was no different , and their role in the warfare is the subject of a new war film , Danger Close . Set during the Battle of Long Tan , the motion picture follows the unseasoned Australian and New Zealand soldiers who put their lives on the melody to fight a controversial warfare that few , to this day , fully empathise .

You ’re my third consultation for this movie , Danger Close . I got to ask Luke Bracey and Daniel Webber about the politics of a warfare movie . There ’s some discourse online about how some warfare movies are n’t political enough because they do n’t have , I do n’t bed , Walter Cronkite condemn the war .

We ’re certainly not trying to make a political movie . It ’s a film about mateship and a very significant moment in Australian history . I ’m very happy to be a part of it , and it was a cracking experience , a swell learnedness experience .

I can only suppose . War film are so distinct because Luke secernate me , " every war movie is an anti - war motion picture . " You ’ve got these young people with these whole lives ahead of them who go off to oppose a war they do n’t needs understand , and some of them do n’t come back . That ’s so … genuine , you know ?

It ’s unconvincing . And the ordinary years was 20 or immature , I think . I mean , what were you doing at 20 years old , Zak ?

Gee , I was being a precocious positive - one to parties and movie screenings .

I was being an absolute moron ! It ’s just incredible . ideate being there at 20 , going through that , seeing those things … The whole motto of those boys in that battle was that it was n’t about you , it was about your mate . You were protecting the guy next to you . In that way , it was all about mateship .

It ’s so intense , it ’s so spectacular , the plastic film is done so well . And that Redgum birdsong at the end , is just a perfect mode to tot up what happened to these military man , in those jungles , and to … I do n’t know , an total generation of Western culture . Can you spill a little about how you were able-bodied to build those adherence , forge that mateship ? I guess the easy result is , " I did work ! " But I imagine there ’s a small more to it than that , right ?

I think we all knew it was an important tale to be told . A lot of it was in the writing . We were all Australian blokes , and a circle of the nestling were really young . Just imagining being in that billet , doing what you have to do and protecting the guy next to you , and trying to get everybody home … For me , specifically , my character is more about … He did n’t like if he was liked or not . He only cared about getting these Kid home to their families .

This is the first time I ’ve gotten to talk to you , but I love a moment of your fable . Many eld ago , before I had , well , any job , I conk out to a company for the pilot sequence of Vikings , and you were n’t there , but you register a screaming telecasting message that play in front of the showing . And I recently interviewedMark Steven Johnson for Finding Steve McQueen .

He ’s a corking bloke , Mark !

And we talk about you a turn , and how you ’re such a jolly , easy - become cuss .

But I ’m crying underneath . ( Laughs )

But you play an authoritative , no - nonsense drawing card who ’s in charge of the lives and deaths of the new world under his command . Is that peculiarly unmanageable , or do you draw near any persona the same mode , irrespective of whether it ’s super vivid or relatively chill ?

I do n’t do it , like any actor , you ’ve just get ta make it substantial for yourself . Obviously , the characters become very important you , whether you use substitutions or whatever your method acting is . You end up caring a lot about the other the great unwashed in the script , and you would do anything to make them o.k. , or assist them get through their life . I opine that ’s where my passion get from .

Did you choose to practice any firsthand sources about Harry Smith ? Did you get to meet him at all ?

I got to meet him a couple of times . But it was sort of … The script was there and the war was there , so I was n’t trying to copy him . I was n’t assay to do an picture of Harry . It was an printing of the situation he was in , and a tidy sum of the dialogue was honest to what he say and that sort of material . I ca n’t do impressions , especially of someone like that . I do n’t recognize , he ’s a very complicated guy rope . There ’s only one Harry Smith in the humans . Hopefully , I did n’t trouble him .

I ca n’t imagine that you did , but you could never tell , right ?

There ’s one thing somebody secernate me he said : " I never remove my hat off . " ( Laughs )

I need to lie with the difference between work in Australia versus Hollywood . Luke and Daniel gave me interesting and unlike answers , so I ’m wonder what your take is on that dynamic ?

We all want to make at abode , you know ? It ’s where we ’re from and what we ’re used to . But there ’s only 20 or 22 million people there , viewers to look on stuff . So you ’ve let ta really make a blue - budget film to get your money back over there , you know ? But America ’s been great to all us Aussies ! It ’s just so gratifying to go home . We were in Queensland for three or four months and it was a dandy experience .

I get to let the cat out of the bag tothis cool guy rope , Jack Randall , and we chatted about the misconception , or how it ’s not a misconception , that Australia is full of ogre that need to corrode you .

Yeahhhhhhhh , well , it look where you are . I originate up in the country , but I consider 95 % of the people in the city have never fancy a snake , you cognize ?

But so much of it is untamed , proper ?

For sure . I think we ’re 80 or 85 % desert in the country , and many people live out there . There ’s plenty of elbow room for things to grow out there . There ’s a lot of stuff that can down you . In the metropolis , though , the bad thing is probably the spider .

Oooh . See , we ’ve get under one’s skin cockroach in New York … I do n’t live what I ’d rather deal with .

We ’ve begin rope … But the funnel - web spider … That ’s pretty deadly .

Oh boy . Nope . Nope . Let ’s get back to the picture show . When you were a boy learning about the Vietnam War in school , did you study the Battle of Long Tan ?

No , I really did n’t . The coevals before me did , but I did n’t . I do n’t know , it ’s more like … It ’s why movie are so influential . I learned about Vietnam through films , American films . It was kind of exciting to do an Australian picture from their point of view . It feel like this film could be shown to Kid at school . Kids are so influenced by what they see , you know ? In movies and all that stuff . It feel like this would be good to show to young Australian fry … Not too young . It ’s still very violent . But to educate them , you love ? To show them this is part of their chronicle , their grandpa ’s story . I think a kid is more influenced by what they see on telecasting .

utterly . The whole reason I have this job is because I take so much more from the picture show then I ever did in school … Which my mom did n’t love , but that ’s how it work out .

It ’s queer how that mold out , correct ?

Would you say you got your education through art , or were you scholastically disposed as a boy ?

A bit of both . There was n’t much on TV or at schooltime that interest me , other than cowboy films . I really roll in the hay the cowman films . I reckon I wanted to be in the great open air , doing that material .

Have you done a Western yet ?

No , but I ’d jazz to do one ! I think a lot of actors want to do it . It would be amazing to do a Western .
