But at the same time , make room for young readers who might be familiar with the part but not with the comic book . And make it relevant , but also draw out in lower-ranking role who fan have get it on for year . And as it turn out , that ’s a really tall order ! I had to kind of sit with it for a while and figure out how to mesh all of those different elements , and get to a storey that supported all of those .
So I really did n’t go in with one special object lens in mind . I kind of go back and I show my favourite Wonder Woman unravel and I think about them for a while and said , ' Okay , do I have anything to add to this ? ' Because there have been such great story telling moments in Wonder Woman over the year , and I had serious imposter syndrome thinking like , ' Can I really add anything to what ’s already been said ? ' So yeah , it really assume a while . It took several weeks of me kind of limn , and dispose things and saying . ' No , I ca n’t do that , ' and issue forth back . And want to strike a balance that was timely , but not so heavy that it was just a slog to learn . Which is why I brought in the mirthful reliever in the form of that almost literal Greek refrain of mythical creatures . Quite literally a Hellenic chorus , who kind of lighten up the tone a little bit . But yeah , it took quite a while to get there .
I know that when you use a modern taradiddle , and a modern type of crisis , there is apparently an apprehension to have Diana ' work ' it .
Exactly . Yes . Yes .
It seems funny , especially with so many superhero movies and tv set shows , and the complaints the great unwashed make about dark , or morally grey stories . They care superhero stories that are a bit bare : right and wrong , ripe vs evilness . The Just War is very clearly disagreeing with that idea . I was turn the pages and thinking , ' Boy I really hope Diana knows what the right thing is to do here'–
Because I sure as heck do n’t ! Yeah .
She end up arriving at an resolution , but was this a case of you working at a problem you do n’t feel there is an solvent to ?
Well , what I was trying to do was put Diana in a situation where there was no unmortgaged mode to use her powers to mend things . I think the real challenge of a character like Wonder Woman is that it is easy to make her too perfect . Because she not only has first-rate strength and speed and these mythical weapons , she ’s really voguish , she ’s beautiful , she come from this very idyllic gild , she has a strong good sense of justice . It almost becomes unmanageable to tell a write up about a grapheme who is so unflawed .
I thought what might be telephone for is to put her in a place where those mightiness are no function to her , because it is so complex that she , number one , ca n’t simply punch her fashion out and fix things that way . Wonder Woman need to love everyone involve is not kick the bucket to make this better . Someone could front at that and cerebrate it is a barren view , or that the domain has changed beyond a design like Diana being able to solve it .
Yeah . I think that could sort of sum up the full rivulet , ' it ’s not that dewy-eyed any longer ' [ Laughs ] . I think we ’re living in such an interesting time . I think when the great unwashed are coming to realise that the issues that we face , we have to face together with . It ’s not as simple as , ' Well if we could just have the right person in the right place , that one mortal could fix everything . ' So it ’s a really interesting metre to be writing superhero comedian . When we ’re at a point of almost superhero skepticism I think . Where we love these characters , I think of my gosh , take the air into any film theater and you ’ll see how much we hump them . That , by that same token , I think there ’s more mention that the problem that we front , whether it ’s climate change , economical inequality , name something , is not something that can be fixed by one individual . Even if that one soul is the most benevolent , strong , smart individual that we can kind of conjure .
That makes writing a superhero comic , especially one like this , I imagine a very unique challenge . Because how does one individual respond to a berth where there is not one obvious neat / kempt solution that can be enacted by a individual someone ? So yeah , I do n’t know if I would needs call it dim because ultimately the number that are faced in the first spark , ' The Just War ' do have a variety of nerve pathway through them , but it takes a collocation of citizenry to determine it . And Diana , in a sense , is not rushing in to shoot down one speculative hombre with one sword . She ’s a facilitator . She facilitate that conversation between those two groups of masses . So finding that function for her was important for me , because of course you do n’t want to say like , ' Death and nihilistic delusion , and you ca n’t do anything so you might as well sit it all out . ' It ’s rethinking what the role of a superhero is in a post where the problem are too gravid to be solve by one mortal .
By the end of the story it does feel like Diana has learn something , even if it is a hard truth . So for yourself , having written Wonder Woman , one of the original superheroes , does that influence your thinking as a writer ? Either in your mental image of Diana , or how you approach a character reference ? Do you realise HER sound ?
I ’d like to cogitate that I do understand her salutary than I did before . I have to say , it took me a while to be able to get to a stage where I could pick up her part in my pass . I think that ’s critical when you ’re doing a solo book , where you ’re pass most of your clock time in the psyche of that primary fictitious character . You have to get their inner soliloquy right . And that was tough ! I imagine coming from a background where I ’d spend five old age writing a YA superhero who ’s going through very familiar problems , of growing up and peer pressure in schooltime , and sample to juggle all of these dissimilar things . Those are things that we ’ve all been through and we can all relate to . But none among us have had the experience of grow up among the Amazons , you fuck , and experience fabulous weapon and sort of coming to Earth as a demigod . That ’s not an ordinary human experience . So getting to the power point where I can hear her , where her vox was something that I could expect around with me , and I could kind of summon up when I was write the dialogue took a second .
It give me a new appreciation and respect for those very first golden years superheroes , who are quite different from us . You know , they ’re not the Spider - Man pilot ; they ’re not the everyman pilot . They are the last of their civilisation , if it ’s Superman . Or they are the daughter of this line of demigods , isolated here on our Earth and ineffective to get back to this perfect gild in which they grew up . They really are more like graven image than human organism , and get into that mindset is quite toughened . So yeah , I in spades have a new deference and appreciation for just how much study goes into make characters like that credible .
